This is an interesting area of debate and the difficulty is understanding the competing objectives: on the one hand a manufacturer is bringing a product to market for profit whether a herbal supplement or a pharmaceutical. On the other hand consumers should have options and freedom to assume risk. The classification of a consumable product as a regulated drug is for the purpose of putting a professional who has a recognized standard of training in between the supplier and the consumer so that known risks are minimized and unavoidable risks are disclosed to the consumer who may then make an informed choice. To put the onus on the supplier who seeks to profit from bringing a product to market is fair. It is not perferct but the reverse onus of let suppliers profit until kidneys or livers fail or someone dies is the situation that most people would, I think, not want to happen. Herbs, supplements and natural products is a huge business. These companies have the ability to test their products and submit their results to peer review and to demonstrate that they are safe. Nobody complains that shampoo companies are forced to do this. Rather it is the contention that products of great benefit are forced out of the market to protect the interests of drug companies. The reality is however that the effect of a great number of supplements are not known and for very marginal effect are over priced. Some carry risks that are not disclosed because they have not been tested. Drugs carry risks, but they are disclosed by law.
My view is, pharmaceuticals, supplements, diet aids, health aids are all huge businesses. I see no problem with making these suppliers demonstrate that what they are selling me for me to consume and for them to profit by is safe for me. I DO have a problem with anecdotal evidence that any particular product is a panacea and is a victim of persecution. Products are things, no people. They are sold for profit. If they work they will work for everyone. If they don’t consumers have a right to know. If they carry a hidden risk, consumers have a right to know.
    … in my humble opinion.

YES YES YES……TRUTHs MUST BE revealed to ALL that WE may make the INFORMed CHOICEs….this is what Kevin speak to and what his documentaries are ALL about :O)

There is definitely NO contention with companies having to show/prove the worthiness, effectiveness and safety of their products, UNFORTUNATELY the bodies so governing are not exactly as TRUTHFull and Transparent as one wishing to make an INFORMed CHOICE would BElieve……
Many of those whom sit on the board of “approval”- those with the eyes to see the research, test results and either approve or disapprove products are in fact ALSO sitting on the boardsof various pharmaceutical and other like product companies……thus there “stamp of approval” is oft times biased and not necessarily based upon FACT……something, unfortunately, kept from the greater majority of WE :O(
